카페 비일상은 ‘좋은 창가 자리’에 대한 생각에서 출발한 프로젝트이다. 어떻게 하면 편안하고 아늑한 자리에서 좋은 풍경을 바라볼 수 있을까. 일반적인 도심 카페들은 외부 조건에 순응하며 도시 풍경을 실내로 끌어들이는 방식으로 계획된다. 그러나 카페 비일상은 이러한 방식에서 벗어나, 도시의 반복적이고 지루한 풍경을 의도적으로 차단하고 내부로 향한 중정을 중심 공간으로 계획했다.
이 중정은 외부에서 바로 보이지 않으며, 방문자는 꼬불꼬불한 진입 동선을 따라 깊숙이 들어와서야 비로소 마주하게 된다. 이러한 시퀀스를 통해 일상의 흐름을 끊어내며, 새로운 공간적 경험을 통해 잠시나마 일상에서 벗어난 감각을 제공하고 싶었다. 중정은 넓게 비워져 정원, 전시, 파티, 혹은 그저 여백의 공간 등 다양한 방식으로 활용될 수 있으며, 도심 속에서의 비일상적 순간을 환기시키는 장소로 기능하는 것을 목표로 했다.
실내 공간은 중정을 바라보도록 배치되었으며, 2층은 특히 아늑한 공간으로 계획되었다. 구조벽과 기둥은 공간을 완전히 분할하지 않고 느슨하게 구획하는 장치로 활용되었고, 그 결과 총 9개의 작은 방들이 자연스럽게 구성되었다. 각 방은 서로 다른 천장 형태를 통해 고유한 공간적 분위기를 가지며, 사용자의 체험을 풍부하게 만든다.
카페 비일상은 도시 속에서 일상적 풍경을 소비하는 공간을 넘어, 스스로 풍경이 되는 공간을 제안한다. 의도적으로 배경을 만들며 비일상적 경험을 설계하고자 한 내향적 건축 실험이다.
Cafe Be-Il-Sang began as a project rooted in the idea of creating the ideal window seat. It explored how one might enjoy a pleasant view from a cozy and comfortable place. While most urban cafés passively accept their external conditions and frame the surrounding cityscape, this project takes a different approach. Instead of embracing the repetitive and monotonous views of the city, it deliberately shuts them out and is organized around an inward-facing courtyard.
This courtyard is not immediately visible from the outside. Visitors encounter it only after following a meandering sequence of entry, gradually moving deeper into the site. Through this spatial journey, the project intentionally interrupts the flow of everyday life, offering a brief detour—a momentary escape through a new spatial experience. The courtyard is intentionally left open and undefined, allowing it to function as a garden, exhibition space, venue for gatherings, or simply an empty void. In any of these forms, it aims to serve as a place that awakens moments of the extraordinary within the city.
The interior spaces are arranged to face this courtyard, and the second floor in particular was designed to feel intimate and warm. Structural walls and columns do not divide the plan rigidly; rather, they loosely define the space, resulting in nine small rooms that naturally emerge within the layout. Each of these rooms features a distinct ceiling form, giving it a unique spatial character and enriching the user’s experience.
Cafe Be-Il-Sang seeks to move beyond the typical café that merely consumes the surrounding urban scenery. Instead, it aspires to become a landscape in itself—a deliberate architectural setting that frames a sense of the extraordinary. It is an introverted architectural experiment that attempts to design an atmosphere where the everyday can be momentarily suspended.
